Dictionary/Order-Based Relationship Management (ORM)
Order-Based Relationship Management (ORM)
Order-based relationship management, or ORM, is managing retail partners around their orders, stock and reorder signals rather than contact records.
What it means
Order-based relationship management, or ORM, puts the order at the centre of the partner relationship. A CRM tracks contacts, meetings and deal stages. ORM tracks what each partner orders, what they have in stock, when they should reorder and what to propose next.
Why order-based relationship management matters for lifestyle brands
CRM was built for pipeline sales, where a deal closes once. In wholesale a partner can look healthy in a CRM while your products are out of stock on their webshop and their last reorder is overdue. The relationship exists. The revenue does not.
ORM answers the question a wholesale team actually has each morning: which partners need an order this week, and what should be in it.
ORM and CRM compared
- CRM unit: the contact or the deal. ORM unit: the order.
- CRM signal: last meeting. ORM signal: stock and reorder timing.
- CRM output: a pipeline. ORM output: a list of order proposals.
Example
A fashion brand keeps its CRM for contacts but runs its weekly sales meeting from an order view: partners sorted by days past their usual reorder date, with proposed quantities per style.
