Forecasting (Wholesale)
Wholesale forecasting is estimating how much each retail partner will order, per product and period, to plan production, stock and sales work.
What it means
Wholesale forecasting estimates future orders from your retail partners. Not consumer demand directly, but what retailers will buy from you, when, and in what quantities. It drives production, purchasing and how your sales team spends its time.
Why wholesale forecasting matters for lifestyle brands
Production lead times in furniture, lighting and textiles are long. Order too little and partners run dry in peak season. Order too much and cash sits in the warehouse.
Forecasts built only on last year's orders miss what is happening on the retailer's webshop now. A partner that is out of stock will order, or lose the sale. A partner that is overstocked will not.
Signals that make a wholesale forecast better
- Order history per partner and product
- Current stock status at each partner
- Sell-through at the partner
- Planned campaigns and launches
- Seasonality by category
Example
A beauty brand forecasts Q4 by taking last year's orders per partner and adjusting for which hero products are already low at each retailer in October. The forecast for its two largest online partners goes up 15%, because both are close to selling out.
